In last month’s blog post, we discussed trend colours for Surrey home painting – focusing on 2017 colour of the year as chosen by Pantone, Benjamin Moore, Glidden, and Sherwin-Williams (each chose a different colour).  In that article, we discussed how trend colours are chosen (who and how) and advised readers to be cautious when using trend colours.

This month, we’ll look at the Sherwin-Williams 2017 colour forecast families. While not all Surrey painters are aware of colour trends, Blue Chip Painting makes a point of reviewing trends from year to year.

What is a Colour Forecast Family?

Several house paint manufacturers create colour forecast palettes (Sherwin-Williams calls them “forecast families”) in response to what they see in the world around them: in home painting, but also in art, architecture, visual media and in culture in general. The trend palettes reflect colour choices that are prevalent.

Should I Paint My Home with a Trend Palette?

Trends palettes are great for choosing a family of colours that will work well together for Surrey home painting. Although this year’s trend will be replaced next year, you can still use it! You can even go back over past year’s trend palettes to get ideas. Like all things in life – what’s old is new again. From design to house painting – trends recycle themselves. When clients are deciding on colour for their house, apartment, condo or office building, Blue Chip Painting often gives this advice to clients: “Consider trends carefully”. Some trend colours may be great now, but in a few years, they’ll seem “old hat” – perhaps garish or out of fashion. It’s wiser to choose “safe” classic colour palettes and use touches of trend colour judiciously to liven things up without becoming overpowering.

Although Surrey painters have their favourite, go-to house paint colour choices, your favourites are more important! In home painting, colour is very personal! If you really want to use all the colours from a trend palette and are certain you can live with them –  go for it! Ultimately, what makes you happy about your home’s style is the most important thing.

2017 Colour Families

Following is Sherwin-Williams (SW) 2017 colour palettes. Although other paint manufacturers will choose different colour palettes, there are usually similarities.

Noir

Noir colour forecast palette

“Noir” is rich, sensuous and romantic. SW suggests that we are “craving a refuge from urban streetlights and glowing screens, space to turn our gaze inward and recharge the spirit”.  You can imagine a den or family room in your home painted with these moody, cozy colours that invite you to relax and unwind.

Holistic

Holistic colour palette

The “Holistic” colour family seems urban, healing yet hip. SW suggests the palette’s colours reflect the new standards of “…sustainable design and radical transparency. As our daily transactions move further into the cloud, acquiring experiences is becoming preferable to buying more things”. If you desire a “modern” palette for your Surrey area home painting, the Holistic palette may be a suitable choice.

Intrepid

Intrepit colour palette

“Intrepid” is more vibrant and saturated than the Noir or Holistic palettes. If you are bold, daring, and confident in your choices, you’ll feel comfortable using this palette for your Surrey area home painting. Of Intrepid, SW says “‘You do you’ is the mantra of a generation primed for self-expression”. We can see a den-office or living room dedicated to this energetic palette.

Unbounded

Unbounded colour palette

“Unbounded” is a response to our “small world” reality. Of Unbounded, SW says “We’re all citizens of the world now. Brands are becoming more purpose-driven, communities more connected.” The palette is cross-cultural and diverse. The Unbounded palette has similar saturation as Intrepid and is more vibrant than Noir or Holistic. As with the Intrepid palette, choose Unbounded for painting your home if you are confident in your choices, bold and a little daring.
